Moved to 2021 Facebook

The St Helier Music and Community Festival (SHMACF) an annual event that attracts thousands of people to Sutton during the summer, has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Taking place each year on the green space next to the David Weir Leisure Centre, the SHMACF has been cancelled due to worries over the coronavirus and social distancing rules that may still apply later in the year.

Our committee has been in constant contact with Sutton borough council to try to enable the event to be moved from its June slot, to later in the Summer; However, the decision has now been taken to move it to 2021. We are hopeful this will keep the existing local sponsors in place and also give us more time to create a huge celebration, the likes of which have never before been seen in this area.

The SHMACF is one of the main events that take place in Sutton / Carshalton throughout the year, attracting people from all over the borough and further afield. Last year saw over 5000 attendees with the Mayor of Sutton opening the event, over 80 community led stalls, a tasty street food section along with displays from the Fire Brigade and local dance and boxing groups.

Karin Flower, of the SHMACF committee, said ” It is with great regret that the SHMACF organising committee have decided to cancel the 2020 event. as we were desperately searching for other options right up to this week. The committee are all so passionate about bringing this event to the residents of Sutton and this decision has not been taken lightly.  The St Helier Music and Community Festival is a truly FREE to enter and enjoy event, with no charge to watch performers, listen to live music and experience amazing things, such as mascot races, firefighter and dance displays, clowns and jugglers and so much more. The committee have spoken to most of the existing support network, including our sponsors, our lookalike and celebrity guests, our volunteers and of course the stall holders and firmly believe everyone is on board with creating an amazing experience in the Summer of 2021. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who puts time, effort and money in to supporting this exciting and important local event. SHMACF is only possible thanks to that support”.

Susan Peters, Chair of the SHMACF committee has said ” We are very disappointed not to be in a position to go ahead as planned. It is highly likely that social distancing measures will still be in force even toward the end of this summer and the committee feel that it would not be possible to run such a large public gathering, whilst at the same time ensure people’s safety. We know that cancellation of the event will be disappointing for the local schools, families and small businesses who were looking forward to attending, however we hope to see them all again in the Summer of 2021.”
